so, unlike air travel where your fellow travellers build mental walls between you and themselves and claim quick ownership of the shared armrest, train travellers know the journey is as important, moreso possibly, than the destination .. why else choose to spend 4 days traveling to Vancouver from Toronto when you could do it in 5 hours ..
there’s something rather nostalgic about train travel as well .. the oiled wooden church-like pews in the station, whistles blowing departures and arrivals, porters assisting with your bags ..
the accommodation I chose aboard The Canadian is called a Roomette .. a private cabin for one .. and it was ideal .. by day you have a lovely sofa chair and by night a bed folds down from the wall, there’s a private toilet which also serves as a foot rest, a sink and a beautiful picturesque window .. so yes you can lie in bed, get yourself a drink of water, turn on and off the lights and watch the world go by all from your bed ..
for me, there’s also something so liberating about having a finite number of activities and possibilities on a train ..
so, here we go, leaving Toronto behind .. but a world of possibilities on a 12-car train await ..
